Herbal extracts

Our team has been working with herbs for decades and has extensive experience in producing herbal extracts! In modern phytotherapy, medicinal plants are most often further processed in the form of a plant extract and used for Herbal Therapy products.

The term “extract” is used for a mixture of substances that is created through extraction with a solvent. The aim of producing extracts for Herbal Therapy products is to enable a physiological-pharmaceutical effect through secondary plant substances.

How are extracts made?

Technologically, the production of an extract is always the same: the raw material is crushed and then mixed with a solvent. This approach often has to be stirred for a long time and/or partially heated so that as many ingredients as possible are transferred from the raw material into the solvent.

If the herbal active ingredients or the ingredients that determine their effectiveness are water-soluble, water is used as a solvent.

For water-insoluble plant substances, alcohol in the form of ethanol is preferred. Ethanol-water mixtures that can extract both types of ingredients from the plant are particularly proven.

After years of experience, this process is carried out in our systems in a complex, sometimes multi-stage and temperature-controlled manner and is quality monitored in our laboratory.

After the stirring phase and waiting time, straining takes place. This step separates raw material and solvent. Sometimes the raw material is extracted again to remove further components. The solvent, which now contains all the desired ingredients, can then be heated to evaporate liquid and enrich the ingredients.
